remember that even setting up a Ltd co. in the UK has its own set of obstacles which have spawned an entire industry of accountants and financial advisors.

Initial outlay to be 'legal' will cost you anywhere from 60UKP to 250UKP [damned US keyboard] depending if you talk to Companies House and the Inland Revenue yourself or pay someone else to do it for you.

Seek some business advice, that's all ... you may find that Limited Liability doesn't apply when accidently killing members of the public, or your crew.

I'm going to do it, I'm going to set up low budget productions, ltd. I really am. Don't try to talk me out of it, I've had it up to here (chops at forehead until red marks appear) with languishing in the script competitions and the 'it's not what we're looking for' or the 'we have something like this in development' letter mountain :-P.

I'm gonna get insured, get a budget, and get filming. 6 months unemployment has pushed me over the edge.

One question - I'm writing a treatment for what I intend to be my first item on the agenda once I'm legal, but do I want until it's first draft or can I set up the company and then write and complete the script?

Why become a limited company? do you get special compensations on tax or something?

he could just go soul trader or into partnership, agreed

but limited liability is just that ... to an extent. the company is treated as an individual with rights (at least in the UK) so ppl would not sue *you* they would sue your *company* which would soon no doubt be declared bankrupt and then you'd find yourself on the board of directors of the next company you form ...
